Changing the Heading Text by Output

In Author-it, you can have a different heading for each output (Word, Windows Help, and HTML-based). You can also give the topic a different name in development (that is, it is displayed only in Author-it).

By default, the heading is synchronized for all outputs. In the Book Editor, Author-it uses the asterisk (*) to indicate that you're using a synchronized heading. If you want to change a heading for an output, click the drop-down arrow to the far right of the heading. This example is for a topic that uses the No Heading template, which doesn't include a heading in the Word output.

Topic Headings

When you first type the topic heading, it applies to all outputs, which is indicated by the asterisk. You might want to change the name of the topic in development, indicated by the page icon Topic Heading icon, to indicate special circumstances. For example, if you're creating several books in the same library that all contain an Introduction topic, you can rename the topics in development to reflect their associated book.

The icons indicate the different headings:

  • Topic Heading icon Author-it development environment
  • Word Heading Icon Word
  • WinHelp Heading Icon WinHelp
  • HTML Heading Icon HTML

To change a heading for a specific output, click the drop-down arrow and select that output, and then change the name.

Once you modify a heading, do not select the synchronize heading option unless you want to make all headings the same.
