Using the Default Word Templates

When you install Author-it, you will find three Word templates in the \Data\Templates\Word Templates folder:

  • AuthorIT.dot
  • AuthorIT_Fancy.dot
  • AuthorIT_Modern.dot

AuthorIT.dot

AuthorIT.dot is the original Word template that has been included with Author-it since at least version 3. (It has been updated at various times.)

The styles in this template have been set to use either a wide left margin (most paragraph styles) or a negative left margin (most heading styles). However, the media objects as of version 4.5 are no longer configured to work with this Word template. If you want to use it, you need to modify the appropriate media objects (Chapter Section, First Section, and Normal Section) to have a left margin of 7 cm.

AuthorIT_Fancy.dot and AuthorIT_Modern.dot

These Word templates were first introduced with Author-it 4.5 so that new users had some sample templates as reference. Both are described in the release notes for 4.5 (see Major Enhancements - 4.5.610 in the Author-it Knowledge Center).

Some notes on these templates:

  • AuthorIT_Fancy.dot defines the heading styles to be all uppercase. As a result, the index is also all uppercase. Change the Heading Base style if you do not want all uppercase headings and index.
  • AuthorIT_Modern.dot uses orange as the spot color. Change Heading Base and Title if you do not want to use orange as the spot color. (Other styles might also need to be changed.)

Before you modify the default templates, copy them and save the copies in a safe place. If you make a mistake when modifying an original template, sometimes the only resolution is to go back and start over. See Publishing and Customizing the Word Output.
